High-functioning is not the same as well

On being the person everyone leans on, and the private loop that runs at 11pm.

High-functioning is not the same as well

There's a particular kind of exhaustion that doesn't look like exhaustion. The calendar is full, the work is good, the group chat still calls you first. From the outside, nothing is wrong. From the inside, something has been running on a low hum for years.

High-functioning people rarely arrive at this work in crisis. They arrive tired of being competent. The pattern isn't collapse — it's the private cost of holding everything together in public.

Here is the uncomfortable part: competence is often the pattern. Being the reliable one was, at some point, a strategy that worked. It got you safety, or approval, or a break from being noticed for the wrong things. Nervous systems keep what works long after the situation changes.

The work isn't to become less capable. It's to notice when capability is being used as a place to hide — and to find out what happens when you put it down in a room where nothing is required of you.

You do not have to break down to be allowed to look at this.

The pause is easier to practise out loud, with someone listening for the pattern.
