Most change moves sideways. This work moves down
The difference between a new tactic and a root.

New habit. New system. New city, new role, new relationship. Sideways motion — a change of scenery at the same depth. It feels like progress for about six weeks, and then the old ending arrives on schedule.
The vertical is different. It goes down: to the moment the pattern was born, and the protection it once was. Nothing in the subconscious is stupid. Every loop was a solution to a situation that was real at the time.
Which is why insight alone doesn't move it. You can understand your pattern intellectually and still react the same way at 11pm, because the part of you running the loop was never convinced by an argument. It responds to being seen, and then to being released.
Touch the root and the whole structure shifts at once — the relationship, the work, the way you speak to yourself when you're late. That's the economy of the vertical. One honest conversation at depth is worth a year of sideways motion.
If this landed
The pause is easier to practise out loud, with someone listening for the pattern.
